Quick take: IVF, abortion, Roe v. Wade, and Donald Trump (actually no, Ginsburg)
The Alabama Supreme Court issued a ruling against IVF. We return, then, to one of the more stupidly wrong claims in American politics. Donald Trump is personally responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade! Um, no. He is not. Let us clarify a few points. First, Donald Trump's appointments to the Supreme Court deviated in no way from the appointments that would have been made by any other Republican. (Perhaps he was a little extra fond of the rapist.) Donald Trump is not, generally speaking, what we call "generic R." In this one, small way, though, he actually is and was. Indeed, the reason that some of the more aware moralists in the conservative movement sucked it up and voted for the most immoral man in the history of politics was their knowledge that he would be "generic R" when it came to the appointment of judges and justices. Did Donald Trump, personally, cause Roe v. Wade to fall? No. Not unless you expected him to deviate dramatically from what any Republican in that position would have needed to do, and that, frankly, is an objectively stupid demand. So trace back the process. Why did he get three, rather than two appointments? Two people. Mitch McConnell, and yes, say it with me, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Mitch McConnell blockaded a Supreme Court vacancy when Scalia died, which was beyond the pale, announcing a rule that he violated when he confirmed Barrett four years later (no confirmations during an election year). And yes, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was arrogant, narcissistic, stupid, and she fucked you. Basically everyone in the political class on the left was screaming at her to step down when Obama could have named a successor, because everything that happened was easily predictable. Trump? No. Trump was "generic R." You know who was not generic? Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her refusal to listen was not generic. How did Kavanaugh get on the Court? Kennedy stepped down. Ginsburg's refusal was uniquely, arrogantly stupid. Every 5-4 decision you don't like? That's not Trump. That's Ginsburg. You know that shrine you have of her? Instead of burning incense at the shrine, burn the shrine.
