The pros and cons of Republican chaos and ineptitude
There is an obvious temptation for anyone disgusted by the Republicans' downward spiral to cheer on the chaos, and even to hope that Kevin McCarthy manages to pull together a majority coalition to become the weakest Speaker in history. Beyond the mere fact that this is funny-- and it is funny-- Kevin McCarthy is among the least competent party leaders we have seen in modern history. One of the most basic rules of majority party leadership is as follows. Never put a proposal on the floor unless you know you have the votes to pass it. McCarthy has never put a winning proposal on the floor. The only proposal he has ever put on the floor is his own Speakership, and he has lost 11 out of 11 times because the dumbass can't count. Worst. Leader. Ever.
So if you are either a Democrat or merely disgusted by Republican extremism (put me in that latter category, but not the former), you might actually want Kevin McCarthy as Speaker, thereby guaranteeing Republican failure on everything. Because McCarthy is a moron. What, would you rather they have a smart leader?
And here's the thing. Yes. Yes, you would. Why? The debt ceiling. Do you want the debt ceiling raised? Just as an example, this is a hard problem for the GOP. It shouldn't be a hard problem, but they are morons and demagogues. John Boehner did not get enough credit for managing his bunch of loons on the issue, but he did, and he paid the price for it. He saved the country from his caucus of crazy people. He was a great Speaker, and I write that completely un-ironically. Can McCarthy do the same? Not under normal circumstances, and he is weakening himself to try to get the gavel, making the circumstances even less than normal.
If you want someone who can solve the hard problem of saving the country from that bunch of psychopaths, you need a good, hard Boehner.
Unfortunately, I don't think they have one, but McCarthy might be a worst case scenario, because on top of everything, that man is fucking stupid.
It's all fun and games, until these idiots blow up the economy.
Friday. How about some jazz? Sonny Rollins, "I Can't Get Started," from A Night At The Village Vanguard.
