Quick take: Continuing Democratic foolishness on the filibuster
Enough of this. The latest story in the continuing saga of Democratic misunderstandings of filibuster politics is as follows. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) has proposed the following "just the tip" version of the nuclear option on the Democrats' various voting reform bills. Go nuclear in the Senate, under the auspices of the claim that overruling the filibuster only applies to, like, the stuff in this bill. And, like, whatever related stuff they might decide later. You know, just the tip. So we'll pass these voting reform bills, over Republican filibusters, but we aren't totally eliminating the legislative filibuster! Just the tip, we promise!
So as soon as I use that rather crude phrase, you should understand how stupid this proposal is. There is no such thing as "just the tip." When Harry Reid used the nuclear option for executive branch appointments and all judicial nominations below the level of the Supreme Court, he made it absolutely, 100% certain that the nuclear option would be used the next time it became relevant to a Supreme Court vacancy, regardless of the fact that he said it didn't apply to the SCOTUS. Why? Because there is no such thing as "just the tip." When Ruth Bader Ginsburg refused to step down, on the premise that the nuclear option didn't cover SCOTUS, so a vacancy would be filibustered, it was proof that she was a moron. She didn't get it. Instead, when Trump won after Scalia's death, with a Republican Senate, McConnell used the nuclear option to confirm Gorsuch. Why? Because "just the tip" is bullshit.
But why didn't the GOP go full nuclear, and eliminate the legislative filibuster? So that they could do what they are doing now. So everyone saying that they would do it if the tables were turned... um... no, they wouldn't. We know that because they didn't.
And of course, none of this is relevant, because Joe Manchin won't support this. Enough of this shit.
Look, Dems. You are overreacting to some of these state-level bills, and underreacting to other elements. What matters are the provisions that allow state officials to overturn election results.
What is the response to provisions on drop boxes and such? Organize. Stop it with the bills that can't pass, and just fucking organize.
What is the response to the provisions to straight-up steal the next election?
Same thing.
Organize. Because that'll be a fucking fight.
Bills that won't pass, and plans that won't go anywhere? This is accomplishing nothing except making political scientists do facepalms. Just fucking organize.
