Quick take: Democracy will break when the Republican Party gives up completely
To the surprise of no one who has been paying attention for the last four years, Donald Trump is still trying to steal the 2020 election. He continues filing legal challenges, and he continues pressuring state governments to overturn the indisputably legitimate tallies by which he lost.
Like the loser he is.
To be sure, Republicans across state governments are showing more integrity than I expected, but I expected zero integrity. I expected them to cave this year. After all, Trump has his cultists threatening violence, not just against the Democratic Governor of Michigan, but against Republican officials in Georgia. I expected them to cave, and steal the election for Trump this year, like a bunch of lying cowards.
So, we're fine, right? Biden will be inaugurated.
The problem: finding Republicans who will admit that is a challenge. It is not merely a challenge finding Republicans who will admit that Biden won legitimately, but finding Republicans who will admit that it's over, and that Biden will be President. "President-elect." They can't even admit that much.
A few posts back, I made an analogy between Donald Trump and Neci, from Octavia Butler's Lilith's Brood. Rather than a demonstration of "toxic masculinity," Trump's behavior precisely mimics a rather toxic woman from Butler's best series-- a woman whose evil takes the form of incessant nagging to wear people down, such that even though they know what a stupid, vile sack of shit she is, she eventually manipulates them into doing what she wants. Trump isn't a manly man. He's Neci.
She'll lose. This time. But eventually, this kind of Neci-like nagging wears down those who don't have enough integrity to start. That'd be the GOP. She'll wear them down. Or, the next lying, losing sack of shit will.
How do we know? They don't have the integrity to admit that she lost. You can see the effect right now, as Trump continues this stupid, futile, dishonest parade of frivolous challenges.
Neci's nagging is wearing them down. Give her enough time, and Donald Trump will convince them to break democracy completely. That's her goal. She will succeed.
